I visited a bike salvage yard a couple of years ago, too. It grieved me to see so many bikes, rusting, and rotting, sinking in the mud. There was a veritable gold mine sitting there, but it was all being ruined by the elements.
I did, however, discover that I could have gotten a Vetter fairing, and a trunk, for much less than e-Bay, only because of shipping costs being so high. Each junkyard is different. Some are reasonable in their prices, some are not. I chatted with the folks there about getting my hard plastic trunk re-painted. I had previously asked an auto body shop about it, and I was told it would be $200-$300! The paint guy at the salvage yard quoted me around $100, for the same simple, gloss black, with a clear coat finish... I know where I will go for having my bike professionally painted -- and it won't be to an auto body shop!
You are correct in your price estimate on the CB900's oil cooler. I bought one off of e-Bay for around $30, delivered (radiator only, with hoses; was in great condition, only needed some fresh, gloss black paint to spiff it up). I then modified it to fit my adapter, but the price was very reasonable, and it is still performing flawlessly, three years later. Cheers!
