I have been thinking about the flashes that I saw and the more that I think about it, they couldn't have been spark.

They were exhaust gases that were igniting after they leaked out of the headers that were attached without the crush washers.  This was also probably the cause of the blueish smoke that I was seeing.

My bike was running pretty rich when it first started up, but after I cleaned the floats it seems to have resolved.
