The paper filters start out white, and they discolor with crap that they catch.  They're very effective, and very inexpensive.  Some come with metal screens, and they work, but if they're not clear, it is impossible to tell when to replace, other than mileage, or if they plug up, and leave you sitting somewhere...  Cheers!
