The paper element is about the finest screening material you can get.  I bought a red, opaque, plastic filter, with a metal screen filter element a few years ago, because I could not find the paper filters in the small size I needed.  I regret that.  So far, no issues...  (Knocks on wood!)  I need to change mine out this year, before anything gets past it.

Took mine out today.  Ran like a champ!  Tried to fire up my Voyager, luxury touring machine:  the choke cable stuck, I pushed harder, and it broke...  The 1979 APJB put the 1993 uber-touring machine to shame.  I love my Honda.  The Kawasaki has a bullet-proof reputation, but it still comes in second place to the legendary Honda Super-Bike.  Rock on, Honda!
