oil temp wire?

The white wire with the woven insulation on it. It goes to the stud on the oil pan and also the switch right beside the cam chain tensioner. It is just for the oil temp light,right? If I whack it off it will run just fine? I feel stupid asking,but my experience with tractors,if the low oil or oil overheat light comes on it usually kills the motor.I just wanted to make sure.I hate that stupid curly boot on the switch that refuses to lie where it it supposed to and am dying to throw it away.Thanks
