I concur with this posting: my 1979 CB750L did have oil behind the left side engine cover.  It's to keep the starter gears lubed/oiled.  The ignition pickups do not mind the oil.  Just remember to put your bike on its center stand before removing that cover.  You lose a lot less that way.
