Problem: key switch won't turn off

Hello,
 I have  77 Honda CB750, which I've been riding on a regular basis.  After a ride the other day, I turned my key to the off position but the lights stayed on. I tried changing the key position, but the lights just stayed on. I couldn't figure it out, so I just disconnected the battery.  This issue happened once before, and a mechanic took the gas-tank off (the switch is under the tank), adjusted the switch for a minute and it was fixed in about a minute.
   I'm trying to avoid a visit to the mechanic.  Any ideas suggestions?
