If it is the bike shown in your profile,  a DOHC, it is what Honda call a "pulse generator", used to time the pulse to the electronic ignition, each pickup is for one coil which fires two cylinders, either 1 and 4, or 2 and 3. It does run covered in oil. And if you put it on the side stand with the cover off, it all runs out! (Speaking from experience)
