I know that my headlight switch had stopped working because the contact points weren't contacting properly, I pulled the switch apart and checked to make sure the headlight was working by taking a short wire and jumpered between the 3 wires going to the switch (low beam to ground and then high beam to ground), and the headlight would come on.
