Lane splitting is actually considered safer than sitting in traffic.

Not that I would do it. I will ride on a shoulder if I see my exit up ahead, but that's about it. At least, for now.

That's a good article.  I think it makes the most sense when traffic is either stopped or very slow.  I split lanes all the time when I get to a red light and there's a line of cars in front of me.  On the other hand, splitting lanes for passing through 50 mph traffic like I first posted is, granted, a little nuts.

When I get to the front of the line at the red light, it is very common for one driver at the front of the line to start inching forward to prevent me from getting away first on green.  This used to piss me off but I now just completely ignore them since the bike has enough guts to just shoot past them when the green lights up.  Other times, when they accidentally left enough space in front of them for me to fit, I just take up the entire lane in front while waiting for the light.  I don't do this much, though, because if somebody gets extremely proud I have a feeling they'll pound on their gas to knock me off before I have a chance to react.

As for the legality of it.. well..  I can bet if you ask a cop here about "Lane-splitting" he'll just give you a blank stare since that's not something they look for in traffic.
