FRONT SHOCK ABSORBERS OIL CHANGE

I am planning to replace the oil of front shock absorbers on my Honda CB-750 four. Last time I did it, I could not compress the springs to engage top nuts of shocks. Is there any easier way of engaging the top nuts by compressing shock absorber springs?
