I have a '79 K model.  I average 43 MPG, but I run mostly two-up, highway, at an average speed of 60 MPH.  I'd have to agree:  it seems a bit low, and synchronizing the carbs is a very good idea.  Secondly, check the idle speed:  book specifies 1,000 RPM +/- 200 RPM, but they state that an accurate, mechanic's tachometer must be used, as the bike's own is too inaccurate.  Checking/adjusting the air/fuel mixture is also a good idea, but to really dial this in, requires an exhaust gas analyzer.  Anyway, get your bike tuned up, install NGK Iridium Spark Plugs (fire near-perfect, every time; easier starts; incredibly quick starts with the weak, OEM coils), and you will likely see improvements not only in mileage, but also performance.  Cheers!
