F is when the points JUST start opening. To get close quickly, set to F and take a piece of paper and put it between 1 set of points, might as well start with 1-4. Adjust the points closed till you can barely pull out the paper. Turn it to T and see what your gap is then. Honestly it has been so long since I adjusted points, I would have to do it to remember it!
Ditch that clymer junk, we have the service manual here. It is much better.
