The first bike I bought was a suzuki GS550L, It was a six speed and had enough power to keep up with traffic but not so much to get in trouble. It was light weight and easy to handle I never dumped it and i only payed 675 for it running with new tires and in great shape. Look around on line, i got mine off craigslist.
It was a great starter bike. I rode it 100 miles a day just for work. The only issue i had was it got great gas mileage but had a small tank. Had to get gas everyday.
