Hydrochloric is WAY TOO STRONG and then you have the problem of disposal and if one little drop gets in your eye you won't need to finish building the motorcycle. That acid just corrodes faster. It does not stop the corrosion. You have seen the corroded battery trays on cars? right.
Phosphoric is easily available.
They sell it at paint stores.
they sell it at hardware stores.
West Marine sells it.
Some call it paint prep or metal prep etc. Just read the ingredients. It is a green anti freeze color.
There is phosphorus in every living thing so if it is diluted with water it becomes safe.
But you can just save the old phosphoric acid in the proper type container and use it again.
Phosphoric acid turns rust (iron oxide), into iron phosphate and basically stops the rusting process.
