alternator problems 1975 CB 750 F Super Sport

My 75 Honda CB 750 super sport which I just purchased a few weeks ago was not charging. I repaired one starter wire at connector plug, began charging for about 300 miles. Just started up and it's not charging again. So I removed alternator/stator cover to start testing. Is there supposed to be motor oil inside this cover area? Because about one cup of oil poured out. Started to rain and had to stop work, anyone know?
