Your theory sounds good, but I really don't know.  The airbox will solve many issues.  Like I said, the UNI foam filter, or a K&N, will give you improved performance, based on my butt-dyno.  Also, NGK Iridium plugs will improve the ignition system, without much investment in time, or money (~$8 per plug).  They require less power to throw a hot spark, and they almost never misfire.  Cheers!
