I think the thing that helped me when I was younger, was taking things apart and putting them back together.  You can't see exactly how it works unless you do that. My dad's Philco record player, tube and transistor radios, his VW bus, bicycles, clothes dryer, old watches...

The trick was never take it so far apart that you can't put it back together.

My youngest son is amazed when he sees me cobble something together. Replacing the flood lights for the back yard: the motion sensor thing died, so I replaced it with regular sockets.  Took him to the HW store, grabbed this, that, a couple of these, cut the power, took the old off, wired in the new, reset the breaker, voila.  Lights in the backyard.  He said, "How do you know how to DO that?"  Then I told him the story I just told you.

Now, why is the Lowrey Genie organ in pieces in the basement?
