Well age isnt that huge a deal but they do age somewhat though as long as there is no major rust on the chain, you should be ok.
As for replacement, get the chain adjusted right, then pull the chain at the back of the rear sprocket, if you can pull it off enough to see between the link and sprocket, it should be replaced. This means the link pins are worn out.
The ride IS the adventure. The destination is just to get gas!
