rear end check up

Hello,
I'm back to restoring/preparing my bike. Now I'm up to the rear end of it.
I want to make sure that the rear breaks are fine and the bearings and, basically that it's safe to ride.
Do I need to take the rear wheel off for the inspection of all parts? What would be the general procedure?

i would appreciate any guiding and directions, where to start from and at what to pay attention.
