Inline filters are worth their weight in gold,IMO. A clear bodied one lets you check the condition of it easily,so long as you dont mind people seeing your dirt

I used one of the sintered types(looks like a blob of yellow metal inside) and had issues with it just like you just experienced. I like the filters with a paper element. They will catch very small particles. Some people have a hard time finding a small paper type in their area. Briggs and Stratton sell them and I find them at my local Stihl dealer. It is the same model used from the factory on their skid steer mower and it fits the same size line that will fit your petcock, so I would suggest to shop there. Runs about $4 for one of them.
