Engine compression would be the main thing to check.
A lot of these bikes have not had proper valves clearance checks and adjustments.

My son bought an '82K for $950,it was stock in good looking cond.It had 33000 miles and ran.
He rode it for about 3000 miles only to find out it needs a valve job.The valve clearance was so tight ,some of the valves burned.
