There are a few threads here about the Spawn of Satan (SOS) as these things are affectionately known. A lot of of them are bypassed or replaced with manual petcocks.

Yes, if you do this, you should turn off the fuel valve when you leave the bike for any period of time to avoid overflow or flooding if a needle valve happens to stick.
