I've been doing research on this myself here in Indiana. I read on another forum the procedure  for our state and verified with a couple City / State Policemen in conversations.
You need a couple forms from here... http://www.in.gov/bmv/2366.htm

First, a Bill of Sale. Form# 44237 https://forms.in.gov/Download.aspx?id=5521 . I was told by the BMV 3 years ago I needed this when I titled a bike that I had a SIGNED INDIANA TITLE for... They told me a bill of Sale out-weighs a signed title (!)

Have the Police come and fill out an "Affidavit of Police Officer Inspection" Form # 39530 to verify the VIN. https://forms.in.gov/Download.aspx?id=4998

I was told this is ALL they NEED.

IF you have an Odometer Disclosure Statement # 43230 https://forms.in.gov/Download.aspx?id=5061 , they will even put the odometer reading on the tile. This will help on resale, otherwise they check the box that says milage is incorrect.

Now, I have heard depending on the mood of the Cleck at the BMV, they may require that you get the Certified letter is "Affidavit for Ownership of Vehicle" #23037 https://forms.in.gov/Download.aspx?id=4836 That's what alpha750 was refering to, Our locals are Prudes but the next closest branch in a neighboring town are very helpful and always been easier to deal with.
