To get the correct length springer.

If you are putting it on a stock bike is easier than on a modified or custom frame.

On the stock bike measure from the bottom of the bottom triple clamp to the axle.
But Shiny Ribs is right . Ask each manufacturer how they want you to measure the bike for fitment.
