I don't know how they compare to the sohc's, but I have tried to lock up the front on purpose while practicing emergency stops and mine just doesn't have the stopping power.

I have a k though which is a single disc. A model with dual disc's may be better.

This of course isn't to say that the drum is stronger though, because the rear wheel only absorbs about 30% of the stopping force (when you hit the brakes, the weight shifts to the front wheel).
