chain and sprocket question

I was cleaning my sprocket chain guard / cover today and found this. It is not all the way through, but I don't want the see it get worse.

The bike has a 630 chain on it that I will be replacing with new chain and sprockets. So the question is should I stay with the 630 chain like it has or switch?

My other bike has a 630 chain on it with no problems. Maybe the PO has a chain come off or some thing.

Also if I remember right is it the smaller rear sprocket the lower r's at higher speeds. Right?

Any input would be appreciated.
