How many teeth do I drop

I just counted my Cb 750F and it has 46 teeth on the rear.  When I am riding it sits at around 4500 at 55mph.  Is that normal?  I was thinking about dropping some teeth to get the rpm's down.  Question is how many do I go?  I was thinking 44, but I just saw one on ebay that was a 36.
