No that oil ring has a purpose. If it was just loose in the hole then why even have one.
That is just wishful dangerous thinking.

Order another O ring from Bike Bandit.

Try taking the O ring off of the screen assy., and put it into the hole to see how it fits.
I bet it does not fit at all.
