Stock carb set-up's usually get between 40-50 MPG.  There have been some recent threads on Pods.  Check through this forum's posts, in the past two weeks, for one by Shinyribs.  He comments on Pods, versus the stock air box, I believe it was on a DOHC model.

Using the stock air box, a K&N Permanent Air Filter (~$50) supposedly increases everything (mileage, HP, torque, etc.) by a whopping 3%.  They're nice with regards to maintenance, though.  Cheers!
