I wanted to thank everyone for the help.  I stopped by the local hardware store and picked up a steel pipe and 12 point socket to go battle this beast of a nut and I glad to say that I won (finally).  I applied a little heat and used the pipe on an open ended 17mm wrench and got enough leverage to pop the nut loose.
