So, I went to the store and took in the bulbs that were in my tail light.  The guy said they were 1157, not 1156 because 1156 only has one filament.  So I bought the 57's and it is still functioning as a just a brake light.  At this point, can I safely assume that there might be something wrong electrical wise?
