my bike starts but won't move forward

first of all, i'm new to the forum. secondly, i bought a 1979 cb750k dohc last july from craigslist for real cheap. it needed clutch work, but i got it running for a couple months. one day, on my way to work, i wasn't able to shift into first from neutral and it made a grinding noise from either the clutch or the transmission. i thought it might be the clutch, so i bought a whole new basket and replaced it, but it still has the same issue. could this be a transmission problem? or is there something wrong with my shifter? i'm new to this so any response would be greatly appreciated.
