If you lubricate the steel cables, you delay them rusting through. If you don't lube them, they will
eventually rust through -- how long it will take is an unknown. My '93 rusted through its choke cable after 19 years; my '79 never had an issue with cable rust, 30 years on. You can play it safe, and lube the cables, or roll the dice. Lubing the cables won't harm them in any way. Cheers!
