I totally agree.

To adjust the throwout portion of the clutch you are shooting for 1/4 turn slack. The FSM tells you to do this with a screwdriver, but I get a better feel for it by using my fingers. I take the clutch arm and jam nut completely off and turn the adjustment in until I have slack. Then slowly screw the adjustment screw out, wiggling it periodically, until all the slack is gone. Then loosen it 1/4 turn. Reinstall the clutch arm, tighten the jam nut and you're set at this point.

Now to adjust the clutch cable. Run the adjustment at the lever all the way in at this point. Now adjust the cable where it enters the clutch cover.

When you are adjusting the cable free play at the clutch cover you need to leave a little slack. About 1/8'' works good.

Leaving a little slack at this place gives the cable adjustment at the lever the maximum ''authority'' for the rest of your adjustment. Adjusting your clutch this way sets the clutch to minimum freeplay at the throwout and at the cover/bottom end of the cable, without setting it too tight. Now you simply adjust your desired amount of freeplay at the lever. No tools require and you can do it on the fly as it suits you. You do not want to run the cable with zero amount of free play. You need some to make sure the clutch engages completely when you are off of the lever. The FSM calls for 1/4'' of slack between the clutch lever and where it closes against the perch.
