I ALWAYS watch my mirrors at the light, and I'm ALWAYS in gear! Something I learned in the MSF course. WHenever someone stops too close, and I know the light is long, I'll actually get off the bike and tell them it's not safe to do that, if someone hits them, they will likely mash me (if I were in the center of the lane, which I'm not). Sometimes I just turn around as they're slowing down to stop behind me and when they're close enough I'll put out my hand in a "STOP" gesture (if there's no more traffic slowing behind them, otherwise my hands stay on the controls and ready to split) . Some of these idiots want to stop right on my rear tire, so I lane split and leave them behind the truck.
I have personally experienced what happened in that video at least a dozen times. Pulling over and watching the mirrors WORKS! One time I had to jump the curb and go onto the sidewalk to avoid it because the idiot hit the car in front of me on the INSIDE of the lane, right on the curb! ALWAYS be ready to do WHATEVER you need to do to get out of the way. I'd rather break a traffic law (like going on the sidewalk) than spend time in the hospital!
