I just put a new ground wire in a very similar place, works fine for me.  Consider adding it to the existing circuit instead of cutting out the old one.  I did this by shaving off the rubber housing and splicing a new path to ground from the old wire coming out of the fuse box.  Two grounds certainly aren't worse than one.
