Rear shock How to measure?

I have $200 to spend on some rear shocks.  I want a set that is good for solo riding but also with a passenger.  I under stand the term in measuring the eye to eye part. But I dont get what a clevis is.  All the listing say the shocks are supposed to 13 inches on a CB 750F 1980, but when I measure I think mine are bigger.  Can that be?
