Drive chain replacement issue!!

Hey all,

I've been looking around the forum all day but could not find an answer for my problem. I'm currently in the process of replacing the drive chain on my 1980 CB750K with a Tsubaki 530QR 108 links. All was going well until the time came to tighten up the chain and align the wheel.

Even with the wheel pulled as far back on the swing arm as possible, the chain still has way too much slack and the chain adjuster screws barely touch those oddly shaped brass spacers that fit in the end of the swing arm. With those spacers removed, I can pull the chain tight enough....    I am relatively new to motorcycle repairs so I apologize if this is a silly call for help. Thanks for any suggestions, love this forum.
