When I put my new one in I did it with the head off, and I believe it needs to be off to do it properly because it fit in from inside the head and rests on a shelf inside the head keeping it from falling out. Not sure how yours could have fallen out unless it disintegrated. The tensioner pushes against it, and it pushes against the head.

I don't get it either. Bike was well ready. And would that have been replaced or at least looked at when things were apart and the valves shimmed? Beyond my knowledge and ability. I'm not about to pull it apart.

I imagine if you needed to get by you could stuff a washer in there with a screw.

so you're saying that putting it into place and holding it there with duct tape ain't gonna cut it?
