F has no hi speed

took my F out today.runs fine up to about half throttle,then breaks up.back off it,she's fine. now here's the wierd stuff.checked timing.no matter how much I advance or retard the plate nothing changes.took out the advancer-it's clean & appears to be working fine.
dont know if the two issues are connected.why doesnt turning the timing plate-the plate the points mount on-do anything ?any ideas?
