Not a bad idea.  I was going to ask you about that but found a 12 inch piece of pipe on Amazon pretty cheap and was able to order it with the proper diameters needed. Convenience is valuable though. You can also make them with holes that align to the holes in the stem and add a set screw so they say aligned.  That would make them better than just a cut off piece of pipe.  Anyone on this site should be confident in buying anything you made too!
