iddle stutter

looking to buy a 1981 cb 750 custom for $700 .overall good looking bike all original.my question is in regards to following issue ,It sputters while in iddle, and when going down the road after 1000 rpms it starts to sputter and will die. Also there is no battery installed,owner jumped it from his car to do the demo. Appreciate your input , iam buying it but I would like to have an idea as to where to start trying to correct the problem.
