Check w/ your DMV, all states are different.  A lot of states, if you can get a 'historic' plate, you can run the antique plate as long as you have the original on hand.  IE in a car, the stickered plate in the glove box, on a bike, maybe under the seat or sandwiched in between the antique tag and the bracket.  Point being you have to display the registered tag when/if pulled over.
