electrical problems

I've got a 1981 CB750 F with electrical problems. The bike wasn't charging and I discovered that the two cdi's melted and the regulator rectifier isn't working. Does anyone have any idea what could have caused this to happen? Could a problem with the stator or rotor have caused this?
