1200 miles, yes 1200 miles 82 750F SS- NO IDLE

after a lot of cleaning- removed from my best friend's basement (has 1985 plates on it!) I have successfully started it ONLY IF I RAPIDLY TWIST THE THROTTLE on full choke.  Snap throttle close and it dies.  NO IDLE.  As my 91 BMW k100RS 16V has injection, and the other Honda I had was a XR75 that I raced in Middle School  LOL    AM I assuming correctly that twisting the throttle is priming the carb and I am not getting fuel to the jets?

Remedy?  HELP?
