Im in Canberra.

My bike has a tired 60,000 miles on the clock.  However somethings are not adding up.  The frame number is from 1972 and the engine number is from 1974.  This seems to large a gap for it to be the original engine.  Furthermore, the engine does not sound or feel tired at all.  It has a cam chain rattle but other than that sounds good once warmed up and idles around 1500rpm.  One day I will get the head off and I suspect Ill find that it has been re-bored and is no longer a 750cc.  Ive had it to 80 in my suburban street and I thought this was pretty good, till I realised it was 80 miles and hour.  I did not anticipate a vintage bike being sooo powerful.

Also with a huge hole in the exhaust it sounds like a wonderfully out of tune V8.

The bike has not been dropped at all, however not much of it is original.  someone turned it into a copper of some sort with a huge sissy bar and forward pedals etc.  But not a classy chopper.  The tank has been re-sprayed poorly.  It has a few replacement parts from different bikes (including indicators from a suzuki), a sterring damper that looks like it was soldered on by a one armed monkey, etc.

My theory is that it was running well when the starter motor packed it in and it sat idle then till I came along.  I can not get the starter motor working still, but it starts first kick.

Im still working on the Carbs and they seem to be the main problem.  The airfilters are a dual pod type that ive not seen on any other bike (look like the ones off a 1970's Torana) that do not fit properly.  Ive had the carbs off once and fixed some minor problems (the trail of petrol it left behind on the road where ever it went).  Im going to put a kit through the carbs, and even bought a kit off ebay however, I made an error and now have a carb kit for a 1982 CB 750.

The brakes will be the next project.

My aim is to get the bike registered for the first time in 20years.  Im not sure what Ill do with it then.  Really only took this on for the challenge.  This is not the right bike for a concourse finnish.  Im tempted to chop/bob it, though Ive not seen a frame design that really excites me.  Id like soemthing with a fairly stock rake, a bit lower, a bit longer, and a hardtail.  the Bobber frames on Cycle Xchange are pretty close, Id just like a little less rake.

Now that I have the old blinker unit working, I think Ill shine up the aluminium and make it some sort of feature.

Cheers
Tim
