howdy guys
Well, it's been a long, frustrating summer, but I fixed those damned "hesitation blues." I told my buddy I was thinking of just selling my '80 F and he asked if he could have it for two weeks. If he couldn't get it running right, then I could sell it. He had a riding buddy at stake. He had it for two days and nailed it--spark plug wires. Damn. $10 copper-core wires from Tractor Supply (they also work on automobiles!).
For some reason he had switched the primary and secondary jets, and that just caused it to burble when cruising at a steady speed. I pulled the carbs, switched them back, aligned the throttle butterflies by sight, and turned out the pilot screws to 1-3/4. 'Twerent the carbs after all that. She runs out propper without synching or tweeking the pilot screws. Whadda ya know?
So if anybody's been sweating a synch job or the pilot screws 'cause your cb is hesitating at certain rpm's, and your carbs are clean and your jets are propper and your bike is stock--bust out the multimeter!
Anyhow, thanks for the ideas and support on this forum. (I know a couple of y'all told me to check the electrical components...shame on me)
