Hey Donald, you know not everything can be fixed but i have seen alot of thing tossed out that could've been repaired like i've said elsewhere,im into drag racing and you see alot of parts carnage there. I had a buddy,Mike, that dropped an intake valve at full song on his 555ci big block chevy it "ruined" the engine. It knocked a hole in the cylinder wall, ripped the valve guide and seat out, totally molested the combustion chamber and the valve itself was lodged in the piston. Seen it done dozens of time before and people throw the block and head away.I told mike i could fix it,he said no way. It was an aluminum head so i stripped all the valvetrain off of it,cleaned it thoroughly, pre heated it, and welded it up with the TIG. When i took the head to be re-machined i also got a sleeve put in the block. IF he had replaced that block it would have been$2500+ and the head woul have been $1200+
My bill=friend=$free Machine shop bill= $500 for labor and $175 for a new piston it was alot of machine work and an oddball sleeve Not everything can be fixed, but its always worth a shot p.s. i have also welded and worked back into shape with a ziz-wheel a set of ring and pinion gears. They were a unique ratio and couldn't be replaced in a timely manner. now, i even doubt that they were as good as new or would've lasted as long as new ones but they made it thru one race for me,that 1,000 hp in a 3300 lb car too.
i lost that race..but at least i made it!! If someone built it from scratch...chances are its not beyond repair
