1977 CB750 kickstand

beemerboy
I,m new to this board so pleez forgive newbie fups. I hope to learn a lot here from all the collective experience. Just got a decent 1977 K7. It has a small rust hole in the top left exhaust, but is otherwise pretty decent. The kickstand is an issue. The bike leans waaay over to the left and the stand does not retract completely under as it should. So.. my first stupid question: is it bent? If so can it be heated and straightened? A bad back from a recent trials get-off prevents me from getting down low enough to look.

Welcome. A picture would be a big help in determining what is going on with your kickstand.

So, it doesn't go up all the way the bike leans a lot? Can you get a pic of the bike while on the stand so we can see the lean?

Generally either the stand has been cut, or it is bent. These are pretty robust stands though. I would almost guess it got cut. It is common for people to put shorter shocks on these bikes and cut the stand.

Re-run... I posted a reply to TOOLS with a photo. It seems I can't attach more than one photo at a time. Here is a closeup of the area where the stand mounts up. There is one inch of play up and down at the outside end of the stand

That frame tab is definitely bent. It is probably because a heavy person was sitting on the bike while it was on the kickstand, or someone backed into the bike with a car. You might try heating the tab and straightening it, but that would take ant temper that is left in the steel out, and it would probably bend again. I would recommend cutting a kickstand mount off a junk frame, and welding it on, replacing the bent one.

Tools1... Looks like that's the problem. How about trying to bend it back without heating.  No brute force, but a really long piece of pipe? Would it likely break off before it bent back to where it should be? When it comes to cutting and welding, I have been told that using a mig welder grounded to the frame would fry anything electronic on the bike. Another probably dumb idea is to heat and bend the stand rather than the frame tab. Here in the high desert of Central Oregon junk frames are few and far between. Incidentally, I also have another CB 750 that is in baskets but complete. The frame label says 1970, but I was told it is a '72. I'm planning on building the motor when hunting season is over. Thanks in advance for your advice>

You would never bend it without heating it. Bending the kickstand would just create other clearance problems. And if welding on a vehicle fried the electrical components, I would spent years of my life replacing them after welding on vehicles. It is an old wives tale at best. If you want a new kickstand mount, I have a pile of junk frames I could cut one off of. BTW I have replaced a lot of these things on old bikes. Never disconnected the battery's, or any other electrical components, and never had a problem.

Tools1... I sure found the right place on the "net" for help and information on this bike. Tell me please what needs to be done to get that piece to Central OR. I understand that would involve time and $. I don't expect any freebies. I looked at the older frame I have and the tab is different. Are the '77 and '78 frames unique in that regard? I'm not trying to be a smart-ass, but why would the tab not bend back without heat if it got bent originally without heat? BTW I once watched a police BMW flop over when the tubular kickstand buckled and bent.

The kickstand usually bends before the mount, but if enough force is applied (like a car backing into the bike) the mount will bend. You could try putting a 10 foot bar on it and bend it back, but it would not be a controlled bend, and might bend somewhere else, or rip right off the frame, causing more damage. The best repair is to carefully cut the old mount off the frame with a die grinder, and weld another mount on. Done carefully no one will ever be able to tell it was replaced. As for the difference between the K-0 K-6 and the K-7 K-8 I am not sure, I would have to go look at my pile of frames. I know the "A" models are different as they have the linkage that puts the bike neutral when the kickstand is put down. I would be happy to cut off, and send you a mount for $25.00

Tools1... Finally got a payPal acct since I've been buying parts on fleabay. Either one works for me. I need some particulars. You wouldn't happen to have a left side upper exhaust( number 1 cylinder) for a '77 or '78 laying around would you? Mine has some holes. I really like the look of the later exhausts.

I wish I had one of those. It's probably easier to find a 4 leaf clover then it is to find good original exhaust.

I went out into the 100* heat, and 100% humidity in the tic infested woods, and searched through my stash of frames today to search for kickstand brackets.
I have these two.

They match my 77 K model.
